Our Story
Founded in 1929, the Engineers Club was a group of engineering professionals seeking to create a collaborative space to share ideas, promote the profession and contribute to the local community. The original members couldn’t have possibly understood the impact their little group would make over the next nearly 100 years.
In 1931, the humble club evolved into the Engineering Council of Birmingham and Jefferson County, reflecting its growing influence and expanding membership across the region.
By the 1950s, the group further formalized its structure, becoming Engineering Council of Birmingham, Inc. This designation helped establish ECOB as a leading professional organization dedicated to advancing engineering in the Birmingham area.
A key milestone came in 1966, when the first Engineer of the Year award was introduced to recognize outstanding contributions to the field. This was followed by the creation of the ECOB Foundation, Inc. in 1968, which supports educational and professional development initiatives.
Over the years, ECOB continued expanding its recognition programs, adding the Young Engineer of the Year in 1970, the Distinguished Service Award in 1994, the Leadership Award in 2001 and the Educator of the Year Award in 2004.
Through its rich history, ECOB has remained a vital organization in the Birmingham engineering community, fostering excellence, leadership and education in the profession. Once a small gathering of enthusiastic visionaries, ECOB now serves as a gathering place for 12 member groups, a service-oriented community contributor and as a provider of tens of thousands of scholarship dollars to hundreds of local students over the years.
