ENGINEERING COUNCIL OF BIRMINGHAM
Engineering Awards Banquet
Every February, during National Engineers Week, ECOB brings Birmingham’s engineering community together to honor outstanding engineers, educators and students, and to invest in the next generation through the ECOB Scholarship Foundation.
About the Banquet
The ECOB Annual Awards Banquet is held on a Tuesday evening during Engineers Week at the Harbert Center in downtown Birmingham. The evening includes networking, dinner, the awards program and a keynote speaker.
Proceeds from sponsorships and ticket sales fund the ECOB Scholarship Foundation, which awards scholarships to Alabama high school seniors headed into engineering programs.
How the Evening Unfolds
1. ECOB Scholarships
We open by recognizing the year’s ECOB Scholarship recipients, high school seniors beginning their engineering studies.
2. University Student Awards
The University of Alabama (Styslinger College of Engineering) and UAB each present an Undergraduate and a Graduate Student of the Year. The universities take turns going first: UA in odd-numbered years, UAB in even-numbered years.
3. ECOB Awards
ECOB always presents last. Our professional awards honor service, engineering excellence, education and leadership.
The ECOB Awards
Nominations for the first four awards come from our member societies. The Engineering Leadership Award is chosen by ECOB.
Distinguished Service Award
Recognizes people whose contributions to the engineering profession and the community have had a lasting impact.
Engineer of the Year
Honors professionals who demonstrate excellence in engineering through innovation, leadership and technical skill.
Educator of the Year
Honors educators who inspire and mentor future engineers and contribute to engineering education.
Young Engineer of the Year
Recognizes early-career engineers who have shown outstanding achievement and promise.
Engineering Leadership Award
Selected by ECOB and usually presented to the evening’s keynote speaker.
